Time seems to fly! I decided not to blog during the summer since I needed to focus on my dissertation and as recreation I had decided to reactivate my yoga sessions. Concentration is essential for research and writing, and my restless mind needs some soothing. A couple of years ago I attended Kylli Kukk’s yoga basics intensive classes In Shanti Yoga school. Her teaching style was enjoyable and it was obvious that she practiced what she preached. She combined her knowledge as a physiotherapist with yoga, and gave excellent lectures of the theme.
Gradually I have learned by heart a yoga session, with ~ 20 asanas. The session includes also meditation, each asana has specific thoughts to help you to concentrate fully. I wanted a session that could be done anywhere, anytime, at home and while traveling.
And today I had an opportunity to admire the rising the sun, during my morning yoga, and later had an opportunity to attend a yoga class by the Ohio Street beach in Chicago. I just love Internet – in the morning I found a small story in “Where – Chicago” about yoga classes by the beach. From Internet I found the time and place. And from Google Maps the directions from Swissotel to beach.
Yoga itself provides excellent opportunity for reflection and learning. It is a quest, actually a never ending, enjoyable quest of mind, body and soul.
I’m spending few days in Chicago, and tomorrow heading for Lisle. Now it is vacation time, my extra vacation week for working at Nokia for 5 years.

Since I was home — for a change — and Diana had yoga scheduled for a Friday evening, I decided to try it out. The teaching was rather supportive, but I hated it. I don’t like static sports. Yoga is even slower than tai chi. I was okay with Chinese martial arts (wushu), but I’m getting too old for that. Golf is definitely too slow. I really like bicycling, and notice that I still enjoy it as younger people race by me in traffic.
I used to go by Ohio Beach in Chicago, but that was circa 1980-1982. It’s interesting as an urban beach, and certainly take full advantage of Lake Michigan. I’ve always been around lakes (and the Great Lakes, in particular), so I always find it strange to be on a real sea or ocean, as I’ve seen around Finland. I guess that I would more at home if I went up north in Finland to the little lakes … but I would hope that the mosquitos and blackflies are better than my home area of Muskoka.
Hi David,
Like martial arts there is many kind of yoga, and many kinds of teachers as well. So some yoga types (like – Hatha can be slow, some are not. Some people teach in slow style, some not. And today I got a new yoga mat, that fits to my suitcase…
